If you are in a relationship, then there is probably going to be a time where the topic of sleep apnea is brought-up. Sometimes people don't understand the seriousness of sleep apnea and what is needed to treat it.
It is important to let your partner know the positive impact that CPAP therapy has on your life.
Matt shares his story about not letting CPAP get in the way of his dating life.
"There have been times where girlfriends are like, oh, you have to wear that? You have sleep apnea. Well do you have to wear it every night? Well, yeah. And some people, I find, didn't like it. I find that odd, because to me it's not a big deal. You only have to wear it when you're sleeping. Anything else that goes on, CPAP's not part of that.
It's perhaps a realisation they don't understand how serious the condition is and how important the CPAP is to my life and to my well-being. And so maybe I didn't do a good enough job explaining it so that they understood. And it's like, well, I'm not not wearing it for you.
It's all about my health. It's just like if I was diabetic and I needed my insulin injections. I'm not going to trade it in. If my story helps one person get on CPAP therapy, it's all worth it. Help somebody get a decent night of sleep."
We hope Matt's story encourages you to be open about sleep apnea and not let it get in the way of you having a successful love life. If you think you may have sleep apnea, then be sure to investigate whether you do or not - you will be glad you did.
