If you’ve recently taken the ResMed Online Sleep Assessment and suspect you may have sleep apnea, your next step is to take a sleep test to get a diagnosis.
If left untreated, sleep apnea can significantly impact your health and quality of life. But you can breathe easy knowing that getting diagnosed is a simple process, with various testing options.
In this blog, we’ll explain the different levels of sleep tests available and how to get started.
There are three types of sleep tests based on the level of monitoring, cost and location. They can be done at home, overnight in a hospital, or in a sleep lab.
Sleep tests are designed to monitor data including oxygen levels, heart rate and other vital signs while you sleep. The type of test you choose may depend on your symptoms, budget and lifestyle.
Let’s break down the four different test levels.
LEVEL 1: In-lab sleep test
A Level 1 test, known as polysomnography (PSG), is the gold standard of sleep testing. Conducted overnight at a sleep clinic, sleep specialists monitor you using sophisticated equipment to gather data such as heart rate, brain activity, breathing and muscle movements.
Before undergoing this test, you’ll need a doctor’s referral indicating a high risk for sleep apnea.

Cost: $500 upwards (costs vary depending on rebate eligibility)
LEVEL 2: In-home sleep test
Level 2 tests let you sleep in your own bed, while still offering in-depth monitoring. This kind of in-home test can measure data such as breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate, brain activity and muscle movement. Level 2 tests require a referral from your doctor and are bulk billed under Medicare (if eligible), making them a budget-friendly option.

LEVEL 3: In-home sleep test
Like a Level 2 test, the Level 3 test can be completed at home. However, it’s a simpler and quicker process than the first two levels. It’s generally available over the counter or online, without a referral. The test can capture key sleep metrics such as heart rate, oxygen levels and breathing.
