How to get a sleep test in Australia

Share

If you’ve recently taken the ResMed Online Sleep Assessment and suspect you may have sleep apnea, your next step is to take a sleep test to get a diagnosis.

If left untreated, sleep apnea can significantly impact your health and quality of life. But you can breathe easy knowing that getting diagnosed is a simple process, with various testing options.

In this blog, we’ll explain the different levels of sleep tests available and how to get started.

Types of sleep tests

There are three types of sleep tests based on the level of monitoring, cost and location. They can be done at home, overnight in a hospital, or in a sleep lab.

Sleep tests are designed to monitor data including oxygen levels, heart rate and other vital signs while you sleep. The type of test you choose may depend on your symptoms, budget and lifestyle.

Let’s break down the four different test levels.

LEVEL 1: In-lab sleep test

A Level 1 test, known as polysomnography (PSG), is the gold standard of sleep testing. Conducted overnight at a sleep clinic, sleep specialists monitor you using sophisticated equipment to gather data such as heart rate, brain activity, breathing and muscle movements.

Before undergoing this test, you’ll need a doctor’s referral indicating a high risk for sleep apnea.

Benefits

Drawbacks

  • Best for diagnosing complex or multiple sleep disorders because of its detailed data
  • Supervised by specialists, ensuring accuracy and support during the process
  • Can be time-consuming (you’ll need to sleep overnight in a clinic)
  • Can be expensive (cost may vary depending on your Medicare rebate eligibility, private health insurance rebate and hospital charges)
  • Wait times may be long

Cost: $500 upwards (costs vary depending on rebate eligibility)

LEVEL 2: In-home sleep test

Level 2 tests let you sleep in your own bed, while still offering in-depth monitoring. This kind of in-home test can measure data such as breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate, brain activity and muscle movement. Level 2 tests require a referral from your doctor and are bulk billed under Medicare (if eligible), making them a budget-friendly option.

Visit ResMed’s bulk billed sleep study page to learn more about this option and book an appointment.

Benefits

Drawbacks

  • Combines convenience with comprehensive data collection
  • Covered by Medicare with a referral, reducing out-of-pocket costs (eligibility criteria apply)
  • May not be as detailed as an in-lab test

Cost: $299 (if not eligible for Medicare rebate)

LEVEL 3: In-home sleep test

Like a Level 2 test, the Level 3 test can be completed at home. However, it’s a simpler and quicker process than the first two levels. It’s generally available over the counter or online, without a referral. The test can capture key sleep metrics such as heart rate, oxygen levels and breathing.

Benefits

Drawbacks

  • A middle ground between comprehensive testing and convenience
  • Suitable for diagnosing common sleep disorders
  • No referral needed
  • No waiting times, results can be provided within 3-10 working days
  • Not as detailed as Level 1 or 2 tests
  • Incurs out-of-pocket costs if there is no Medicare referral

Cost: Up to $149

For Level 3

  1. Speak to your doctor about accessing a Level 3 test. Make sure you take your Online Sleep Assessment results with you to your appointment to discuss
  2. Purchase your home sleep test from a sleep clinic, pharmacy or online
  3. Complete the test at home and return the device for analysing.
  4. You don’t need a referral for Levels 3. However, seeing your doctor or a ResMed Sleep Coach can help you make an informed choice.
